Kurt Donald Cobain was born in Hoquiam, Washington on February 20 1967.
When he was just three years old the family moved to Aberdeen, Washington.
Even at that young age he had developed a rebellious streak. He would often misbehave and blame his behaviour on his imaginary friend, Boddah. At home the atmosphere was often strained, this had a profound effect on the youngsters health, he became a sickly child.
From the age of five he became dependent of prescription drugs for a stomach complaint.
When he was seven his parents separated, Kurt found it difficult to adjust to the new arrangement. He spent his time passed from his father's apartment to his mother's home that she had begun sharing with a shore man. Kurt became increasingly harder to deal with.
His parents found they could not cope with the surly young man that Kurt was developing into. And he began to stay with various relatives.
At the age of twelve, Kurt began following the punk rock bands of the day, although he was still a hardcore fan of the Beatles, he found an outlet to his anger with the songs of the Sex Pistols.
In his early teens he received his first guitar. He was fascinated by it, and began to teach himself to play. He was known to later comment that his guitar was his best and only friend.
During his High School years he had gained a reputation for being a social misfit, but this did not bother Kurt. He heard a local band play and decided this was what he wanted to do.
After several attempts, he managed to form his own band. It went through a few changes in its line up and eventually Nirvana was born. They secured a record deal with a local Seattle label. They recorded their first album which they called Bleach; soon the band had gained a huge following, especially in England and Holland.
While on the merry-go-round of recording and performing, Kurt was introduced to a girl whose father had been a member of The Grateful Dead. Her name was Courtney Love.
On February 24 1992 Kurt and Courtney married in Hawaii. They went on to have a daughter who they called Frances.
Gradually Kurt became disillusioned with the music scene although he still enjoyed playing.
After playing a concert in Munich, Kurt was hospitalised one week later. He later discharged himself; he was then reported missing.
On April 5 1994 Kurt was found dead in his home from a gunshot wound.
